The Moving Process

The full-service moving process provided by The Deland Mover will transform your expectations of what a mover should provide from start to finish. We only ask that you give our company the same consideration you would give any mover.

After your first conversation with our customer service professionals you will be more informed than you have ever been regarding the moving industry, you will understand the relevant regulations and be able to make a well informed decision regarding your next move.

1. Get your Quote

Getting your moving quote is the first step in moving (You may want to learn a little bit about the industry first.). I would suggest learning about the regulations in your State as a great place to start.

The FMCSA is the federal regulator for moving so they are a great resource as well. Check out the FMCSA “Protect Your Move” information page and resources.

Make sure you call around to at least 2 or 3 movers to get an idea of what the local market looks like and what the prices average out to be. Every area is a little different.

When you are shopping for moving quotes, always ensure you are receiving the same type of quotes from each mover. This is important so you are comparing apples to apples and oranges to oranges.

The best thing to do is ask for a binding quote. Ensure your rates are guaranteed and you have a total price for your entire project from start to finish.

Do not agree to any hourly price, per pound price or per cubic foot price if possible. Binding quotes should guarantee the entire price of the job, but can be confusing if a mover or broker binds a type of rate instead. Read all of your contracts in full.

2. Sign Your Contract

When you sign your contract, be sure to read the entire contract. Regardless of what you discussed with the mover in person or on the phone, always read the entire contract.

Many moving companies bill with itemized charges that you may not understand or be aware of. This is where you will find those charges if they exist. You will also be made aware of any company policies that affect your move, like cancellation and rescheduling rules, cost for delays, etc…

Once you sign your contract, your mover is bound to the prices on the paperwork. You of course still have the right to cancel or request changes.

3. Pay Your Deposit

Once you pay your deposit, things do change a little bit. There may be a legal exchange at this point you could be bound to pay the entire bill. Most companies would only keep your deposit if you do cancel, but this is an important step.

Be sure you are ready to move before you pay your deposit! Have all of your ducks in a row and make sure you have dependable realtors, lawyers, etc..

4. Get Your Things Packed

The best choice here is to just schedule your mover to do the packing. When your mover packs, all of your boxes automatically become insured at your valuation rate. This is a great benefit, plus who wants to do all that bending over and over again?

If you do pack yourself, be sure to think about the layout and design of your new home. When you label your boxes, label them for their destination, on the side, and use descriptive words. You’d hate to be searching high and low for that TV remote the first day in your new home…

5. Get Your Furniture Loaded

This is why you hired The Deland Mover. The back breaking, heavy lifting, exhausting part. We get it. We survive as a company because moving sucks. The only difference between us and our clients is that most of us have learned to enjoy moving to some degree. It helps when you’re really good at it.  😉

Make sure your movers always pad all of your furniture before loading. Also, make sure everything is packed down to the last junk drawer. Nothing worse than a drawer of loose items spilling out because someone skimped on the packing.

6. Let’s Get Moving!

This is the most exciting part! We are finally going somewhere. Hopefully, at this point all of your things have been properly packed and loaded. You may need to make another trip or two, but finally you’re moving into your new home!

The transport process is especially important. Always ensure your goods are properly loaded and packed. The roads are very bumpy! Your movers cannot avoid every pot hole on the road. If you did your own packing, then this is the moment of truth for you!

7. Unloading and Staging Your New Home

Unloading is usually a little faster than the loading. This is good news. It’s really all downhill from here. Make sure someone at the home is present to let the movers know where to place all of your furniture and boxes.

There’s nothing worse than having to move a 400 lb armoire more than once! Your movers should be able to figure out the layout of your home pretty quickly and a simple walk through and game plan will tie it all together.

8. Paying Your Final Bill

You may have already paid your bill at this point. The final bill is usually paid upon arrival at the unload. So this part is interchangeable with #7 (unloading).

Make sure you are aware of what types of payment methods are accepted at the current time. At Lake City Mover, we accept cash, credit, and debit cards. We do make some exceptions for commercial moves, money wires, certified bank checks, etc.. but these situations don’t apply to the common client.

Many movers brag about the amazing tips they get on the job and this is true. In our industry it is very common to get a large tip. In no way are our customers bound to tip our movers. We pay our movers top pay in the market to make sure they take the best care of our customers. That’s our job as far as the owner is concerned. But if you feel obliged, go ahead and take care of the movers however you see fit. Pro-tip: Usually a tall glass of water goes a long way, it get’s pretty hot in the summer in a moving truck in Florida.

9. Unpacking

Unpacking is usually a long drawn out process that never really ends. Most people end up with a few boxes thrown into the attic or garage that never get completely unpacked. Don’t let this happen to you.

Our movers will gladly unpack your things for you. This is a great service for the following day of your move. In just a few hours, we can have all of your boxes unpacked and have your entire house organized. We will remove all of the debris from your home and leave you with nothing but a beautiful memory of the work you didn’t have to do.

10. Leave A Review!

Let’s face it, moving is a tough job. Our company thrives off of our past clients word of mouth and online reviews. In today’s world, everyone shops around and compares company’s reviews.

Leaving your mover a review is always a great way to show your appreciation. The Deland Mover will get some good feedback on the project, and we pride ourselves in our many 5 Star reviews!
